The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man

Upright: Suspension, restriction, letting go, sacrifice

Reversed: Martyrdom, indecision, delay

The Hanged Man shows an anonymous man, a celebrity perhaps, suspended, upside-down, from a sidewards facing Daily Mail ‘M’ logo.  Given his stance it is believed that the man is hanging from the website and press of his own will.  His right foot is bound to the M but his left foot remains free, bent at the knee and tucked in behind his right leg.  His arms are bent, with his hands held behind his back.  The man is wearing red trousers representing hipster status and a daring will.  Around the Hanged Man’s head is the bright flash from a camara, suggesting he is courting the paparazzi.  The grey background however suggests invisibilty, clearly he is not blending in right now.  This is the card of ultimate surrender to the forces of the Internet, of being suspended in time online and of the sacrifice to the mass online audience.
